Council Meetings

At least 4 council meetings are held annually – venues rotated by the different main branches of IMASA. The aim of these meetings are to report back on the various projects under the banner of IMASA, be it from the main branches, sub-branches & sub-committees eg: publications, membership etc Council members makes a concerted effort to attend these meeting and submit reports in order for the organisation to continue working efficiently as well as improving on any shortcomings. The board of council members consists of National Executive & branch executive members of past years including current NEC & Branch representatives. This 6-10 hour meeting allows detailed discussions and decision making within the organisation.

Annual Graduations

The Islamic Medical Association of South Africa congratulates new medical and Health Science Students on the completion of their respective degrees and diplomas. At the end of each year a function is held to welcome these newly qualified professionals to the health profession. The graduates then become members of the IMASA and render their voluntary services when called upon. The graduation function is attended by all Muslim medical and health science graduates. Each graduation dinner is hosted by the respective IMA branches across the country.

The Islamic Medical Association of South Africa [IMASA] honoured new medical and health science graduates at dinners held across the country. The event is held each year to officially welcome Muslim graduates to the health fraternity. It also gives IMASA an opportunity to introduce graduates to the work done in the non-profit sector.

The IMA Durban Branch held its Graduation Dinner on 29 November 2013. A total of 570 people attended of which 79 students were honoured. It was a fund raising event with Prof Sabiha Essack, Head of the Dept of Pharmacy at UKZN Westville Campus, being the guest speaker. She gave a motivational talk on education, career and contributions to humanity.

The IMA Western Cape successfully hosted 400 delegates on Wednesday, 27th November 2013 at Islamia College Hall in Lansdowne. They welcomed to the healthcare fraternity new dentists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, nurses, a natural medicine practitioner, pharmacists, doctors, as undergraduates with a total of 60 delegates from University of Western Cape, University of Cape Town, College of Nursing and Stellenbosch University attended. The evening was opened by Hafeez Umer Agherdien and the MC provided the audience with an overview of IMA activities and projects. Graduates were honoured in their various groups with our respected elders, Prof Mohamed Coovadia and Dr Fahmi Williams congratulating them individually.

The Tshwane graduation was held on the 29th Nov 2013 @ Al Ghazali Sports Centre in Erasmia, around 100 guests attended the event. Qiraat was given by Hafez Naem Jeebhay and the guest speaker of the evening was the President of IMASA; Dr Shoyab Wadee. Lifetime awards were given to Dr Bashir Hassan-Mia, Dr Ahmed Moosa, Dr Satar Aboobaker, Dr Suliman Carim, late Dr Sabadia

The Johannesburg Branch graduation hosted 90 graduates in total and ±320 guests attended the annual graduation at Image Lifestyle Conference and Wedding Venue in Johannesburg. Dr Imtiaz Sooliman was the honoured guest speaker and offered jewels of advice with regards to the selfless sacrifices of all health professionals. The MC was Mr Ashraf Garda and an honorary award was presented to a very dedicated member of IMASA; Dr M.I.A.H Rawat. This year, the Johannesburg branch decided to host a lunch (instead of a dinner) event and this change was received favourably by attendees. The branch also held a small medical exhibition, as a means of raising funds, as well as an opportunity for our members and the community to show-case their products.

The excitement at the functions was infectious as graduates met and congratulated each other. Each student was honoured. Lifetime awards were given and positive feedback was received by all that attended. We sincerely hope that these graduates will become active members of IMASA Inshaa Allah.

IMA Membership

The IMA has grown in leaps and bounds and has over the years developed into a large national and international body with a membership of around 1000 health care professionals and a further 5500 on the mailing list. Membership is open to all medical and allied health professionals.

It is through the dedication and commitment of the IMA membership that projects for the indigent communities have been so successful. Members are always willing to sacrifice their time to provide their expert and specialist medical care to the underprivileged.

Publications

The Islamic Medical Association has conducted extensive research into Islam and healthcare and has documented their findings in over 50 publications since 1980. In addition the IMA publishes a well-known medical journal, JIMASA (Journal of IMA South Africa), which encompasses the original research papers of many Muslim health professionals as well as reviews and articles relevant to the Muslim medical fraternity.

BOOKLETS:

1) Family Planning and Abortion – an Islamic Viewpoint: Qazi Mujahidul Islam

A simple reference work in response to the complex question of family planning. Its chief merit is in providing solutions to the question of contraception and family planning, presented in the form of questions and answers.

2) A Practical Guide for Managing Drug Abuse: Mohammed Coovadia

This study outlines the diagnosis of drug abuse and provides certain practical guidelines in assisting those caught in the web of such aberrations. Exposition of the Islamic attitude vis-à-vis the consumption of intoxicants confers added meaning to the seriousness of the subject.

3) Fasting and the Patient – Some Guidelines: IMA of South Africa

An important work providing solutions to issues faced by the fasting patient. It also provides useful information about the general rules of fasting; medical issues related to women, marital and miscellaneous issues relevant to concerned Muslims.

4) Islam and Science: IMA of South Africa

This work makes a justification of the scientific method through recourse to Quranic data relevant to modern science, and recognizes the Prophet (SAW) as the initiator of the age of empirical knowledge.

5) Muhammad the Family Man: Ahmed Elkadi

The ennoblement of women and the elevation of the institution of marriage at the hands of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) is the primary focus of this study. It illustrates the saying of the prophet (SAW): Marriage is half of Faith.

6) Hajj – What does it mean?:  Mohammed Coovadia

This concise work explains the meaning and importance of Islam’s fifth pillar i.e. the Hajj (the Pilgrimage to Makkah). The significance of each of the rites of Hajj is presented in a way that succeeds in reminding the reader of Islam’s transcendental dimension as well.

7) Reflections on Islamic Medicine: IMA of South Africa

This work consists of five pertinent essays dealing with the concept of Islamic Medicine by leading Muslim medical scholars and practitioners. It also gives us an insight into the need for evolving Islamic medical institutions with their own specific Islamic medical textbooks.

8) The Muslim Patient – A Guide for Health Care Professionals: Farouk Haffejee

This concise work outlines the basic religious precepts, which concerns the day-to-day behaviour of each Muslim individual. It is compulsory reading for non-Muslims and even Muslim health care professionals. It forms an essential prerequisite for establishing a harmonious interaction between medical personnel, pharmacists, allied health attendants and their patients and users of services.

9) The Alcohol Content of some Commonly Available Medicines: C.M. Dangor

This is a comprehensive description of alcohol containing medicines, including the percentage content, available in South Africa. Some discussion on alternative preparations is presented.

10) The Shari’ah and Organ Transplant: A.F.M. Ebrahim and A.A. Haffejee

This work concerns two religious views – for and against the transplantation of human organs. It also looks into the concepts of ‘brain death’ as applicable to organ transplantation (though no definite fatwa (religious decree) on this problem is discussed).

11) Islamic Jurisprudence and Blood Transfusion: Abdul Fadl Mohsin Ebrahim

This work concerns the issue of blood transfusion and the response (both historical and current) of Muslim scholars. It also touches upon the reality of blood banks and the religious factor involved.

12) Islamic Guidelines on Animal Experimentation: AFM Ebrahim and AI Vawda

The use of animals in biomedical research and training is a controversial issue. This work attempts to extrapolate certain Islamic guidelines on the subject of animal experimentation from related teachings in the Quran and Sunnah.

13) A Healthy Diet – Islam Shows the Way: MAK Omar

Present day dietary habits in affluent countries are very recent innovations representing an unprecedented, unique nutritional development. This has been linked to numerous diseases of modern living. Eating behaviour, as prescribed by the Quran and exemplified by the Prophet (SAW), would certainly go a long way to preventing these modern scourges.

14) Ethics of Medical Research – Some Islamic Considerations: AFM Ebrahim, HA Randeree, & AI Vawda

Taqwa (consciousness of the presence of Allah) makes man responsible and accountable to his Creator for all his activities. Thus the question of accountability implies that biomedical science and technology can never be completely divorced from ethics. In Islam, moreover, ethics is not independent of Shariah.

15) Islamic Code of Medical Ethics – Kuwait Document

This is an important handbook for the Muslim health practitioner, as it provides important guidelines on a number of issues, including defining the medical profession from an Islamic viewpoint, doctor- patient relationships and the sanctity of human life.

16) Death and Dying – Advising Patient and Family: AFM Ebrahim, GM Hoosen, H. Hathout 

This book attempts to extrapolate certain guidelines from the broad teachings of the Quran and Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) that could be effectively used when communicating with terminally ill patients and their families. It also addresses the issues surrounding euthanasia.

17) Islam, the Environment and Health: Mustafa Abu Sway and AbdulAziz Sachedina

A major challenge of this millennium is the environmental crisis. In a world obsessed with materialism, great technological strides have been made at the expense of the environment. This has had an adverse impact on the mental, spiritual and physical health of people.

In this publication the authors critically analyze the current environmental crises and provide an Islamic framework based on Tawhid, Khilafah and Amaanah.

18) Code of Health Care Providers: IMA of South Africa

This booklet is the result of a number of workshops held in the different provinces to formulate a code of conduct for health care providers. It provides guidelines based on the Quran and Sunnah on issues relating to personal conduct, the manner of conducting their practice, their relationship with their patients and among themselves, and their role within their community.

19) The Aids Dilemma – A Progeny of Modernity: Malik Badri

The author explores some of the relationships between AIDS and modernity and the impact that lifestyles and the sexual revolution has in perpetuating and causing the epidemic.

20) AIDS Prevention – Role of Governments, the Media and Organizations: Malik Badri

A reproduction of the last chapter of the author’s thesis on “The AIDS crisis: a natural product of modernity’s sexual revolution”. The author outlines practical, Islamically oriented measures that should be taken to provide a lasting solution to the AIDS Crisis.

21) AIDS prevention – Failure in the North and Catastrophe in the South – A Solution: Malik Badri

The author outlines why the Western model of AIDS prevention has failed and why it is clearly inappropriate for the rest of the word. He presents the Islamic lifestyle as a solution to this modern scourge. (Calibri Reg, 13pt)

This publication consists of three well researched and though provoking papers on Prophetic Medicine by the three prominent Muslim physicians. They maintain that Prophetic Medicine continues to exert its influence on medical practice to this day. It is anticipated that this publication will inspire Muslim medical practitioners to study Prophetic Medicine and apply the wisdom of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) in their practice of medicine.

23) Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Ethical Dilemmas – Guidelines for Muslim Families: Abul Fadl Mohsin Ebrahim

This publication gives the reader an insight into how Islamic teachings view medical treatment and the difficulty that contemporary Muslim scholars have in determining the end of human life. It also touches upon some ethical dilemmas in the ICU setting with the aim of giving guidelines for the management of these delicate situations.

This publication is a collection of his talks that he gave in South Africa and other parts of the world. Some of the scholarly papers in this publication are unique and they, in reality, laid the foundation for what came to be known as Islamic medicine.

A well-researched book that addresses some of the biomedical issues facing Muslims including birth control, abortion, surrogate motherhood and related issues.

A well-researched scientific critique of the theory of evolution, and includes the Quranic perspective on the issue.

6) Marital Intimacy – An Islamic Guide to Sexual Bliss in Nikah: Shakira Cassim Khan

Sex and sexuality are extremely difficult topics to discuss openly because of their sensitive nature. Yet during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) the Sahabah (RA) were not afraid to ask about all affairs including sexual relationships. The Holy Quran and Sunnah have laid out the etiquette of engaging in sexual intercourse. Dr Shakira Cassim Khan courageously discusses the topic openly and tactfully.

7) Caring for the Elderly: A.F.M. Ebrahim, Malik Badri, Bilkish Cassim, M.C. Solwa

Deterioration of human faculties suffered in old age depicts the most obvious evidence of human frailty and dependence that is the inevitable fate of human beings who reach old age. Our debt to the elderly can never be repaid in full and for this reason it is imperative for us to value their presence and accord them all the support and care that they rightfully deserve. This publication touches upon the rights of the elderly, their status in society and the understanding and management of their health requirements at the most critical period of their lives.

8) Religion and HIV/AIDS: Dr Farouk Amod

This publication is a pioneering work in that it documents the Muslim response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic in South Africa. It also touches upon the support that other religious bodies in KwaZulu-Natal are extending to the HIV/AIDS patients. Furthermore it also addresses the mechanisms that Islam and other religions are putting in place towards arresting the spread of this global pandemic. Hence, the general public will find this publication to be both stimulating and thought provoking. Materials in this book were originally submitted by the author for his Doctor of Philosophy (D. Phil) degree in Religion and Social Transformation with specialization in Islamic Studies to the School of Religion and theology, University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2004.

9) An Introduction to Islamic Medical Jurisprudence: A.F.M. Ebrahim

This book adds a new dimension to medico-legal literature in South Africa by relating the Islamic approach to current medico-legal problems in our society. It covers the usual topics expected in a medico-legal text such as medical treatment and the doctor-patient relationship. In addition, the author tackles a number of controversial topics such as contraception, assisted reproduction, termination of pregnancy, blood transfusion, tissue and organ transplantation, euthanasia and HIV/AIDS. In each instance he describes the secular legal position in South Africa – sometimes with references to other jurisdictions, especially the United Kingdom and the United States – before explaining the Islamic approach to the topic concerned.

Renal Dialysis Project of the Islamic Medical Association of South Africa [IMASA]

National Project to assist needy persons afflicted with kidney disease.

Alhumdulillah, with the dedication of the committee members of this project and the kind generosity of the humble and willing donors, the IMASA’s Renal Dialysis Project was launched in Durban in November 2007; in Gauteng in October 2011 and in Cape Town in January 2014. This project has been a huge success and the main objective is to provide funds for the underprivileged patients who do not have the financial means to continue their chronic dialysis treatment regimens.

A sizeable number of our patients are Zakaat eligible whilst our Non-Muslim patients are supported by Lillah funds. A strict social assessment is done by representatives from SANZAF or a Baytul Nur senior social worker to verify eligibility of patients to be admitted to this extensive and unique programme.

Dailysis costing is approximately R8,000.00 per month per patient.

At commencement of the acceptance of the patient onto the programme and the funding agreement between IMASA & the patient, the patient is required to join a medical aid fund for which contributions are paid for by the patient’s family [or IMASA if funds are available] once the medical aid becomes effective after 1 year. This reduces costs significantly in the long term and allows us to focus on new applicants in the new year. The private sector costs for dialysis are very expensive for these patients and IMASA has been fortunate to negotiate with specific dialysis units for subsidized rates.

It is our long term goal to establish a Dialysis Unit and we hope to see this in the very near future AAMEEN.

IMASA [Tshwane Branch] Annual Graduations 2015

The IMASA [Tshwane Branch] hosted a Graduation Lunch on Sunday 01 November 2015 at “The River Runs Through It” in Centurion Gauteng. The guest speaker; Maulana Ebrahim Bham delivered an amazingly inspirational talk. We were honoured with the presence of 30 Graduates and Post graduates and an additional 150 guests who attended this event. Our Honorary awards were presented to Dr Anver AC Cassim, Dr Anver Suliman, Mrs Noogehaan Cassim & Mrs Khairoonisha Carrim who have dedicated their lives to uplifting the community. It was a wonderful and memorable event and we wish all the Graduates success in all their future endeavours AAMEEN.

IMASA [Durban Branch] Annual Graduation 2015

The IMASA [Durban Branch] hosted their Annual Fund Raising and Graduates Dinner on the evening of 30th November 2015 at the Orient Hall to honour all Muslim graduates in the health science fields.

The M.C. for the dinner was Sabera Asmal (Chairperson of IMA Durban Branch). The evening commenced with a recitation from the Quraan, followed by a motivational talk by Dr G.M. Hoosen, a founder member of the IMA. He presented a gift from the IMA to Dr E.A.K. Abdulla, who is an active member of the IMA and will be moving abroad in the new year. Mr S. Suleman did a power point presentation on the activities of the IMA.

Our main sponsor was Standard Bank and the secondary sponsor was 27Four Investment Managers. Their representatives did a short presentation on their services. Certificates of appreciation were presented to Standard Bank; 27Four Investment Managers, Iqraa Trust and Akbar Moosa by Mr Solly Suleman, an Executive Member and Trustee of the IMA.

Guest speakers for the evening were Hafez Fuzail Soofie, Imam of the Westville Soofie Masjid and Mr Albert van Jaarsveld, Vice Chancellor for the University of KwaZulu Natal. Hafez Soofie spoke on healing ourselves – then only will we be able to heal others. He said: “forget about “me” and concentrate on doing for others and that will benefit us the most.” Mr van Jaarsveld spoke on the recent happenings at the university. He spoke about transformation in the pursuit of excellence for the betterment of all. He was positive about changes in the future.

The graduates read the Oath of a Muslim Health Professional, which was conducted by Sr Honey Allee, nursing co-ordinator of the IMA Clinics, who also highlighted the 16 Days of Activism for no Violence against Women and Children. This was followed by the presentation of a bag and a copy of the Oath to the graduates by Dr M.C Solwa, Executive Member of IMA, and his wife Dr Fatima Shaikh. Standard Bank presented a gift to the graduates.

A vote of thanks was done by Yasiera Mohamed (Vice – Chairperson Durban Branch.) The programme concluded with a Dua by Dr E. Khan.

Prior to the IMASA Durban Branch Graduation dinner a photoshoot for the handover of a Mobile Clinic and a VW Caddy was done. The Mobile Clinic was fully sponsored by the South African Muslim Charitable Trust, which is the social wing of Albaraka Bank and the VW Caddy was partly sponsored by 27Four Investment Managers. The sponsors and the IMA members were present for this event.

IMASA [Cape Town] Branch Annual Graduation 2015

We thank and praise Allah [SWT] for His Infinite Mercy and Blessings.

The IMASA [Cape Town] Branch hosted a successful Graduation Ceremony & Fundraising Dinner on Wednesday, 2nd December 2015, Islamia College Hall, Lansdowne. A total of 450 people attended the event. Exhibitors included: PPS Insurance, Melomed Hospital Holdings and L.A. Sonday Insurance.

The programme was opened with Qiraat by Fajrul Islam Learners, Alhamdulillah.

Despite the disruption of examinations, which impacted a great deal of our invited delegates, we hosted 75 graduates in the faculties of Medicine, OT, Dentistry, Oral Hygiene, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Social Work, Unani Tibb, Complimentary Health Science, Chinese Medicine & Acupuncture.

Post Graduates included: Obstetricians and an Oncologists. Prof Razeen Davids, was honoured for his Phd in Development and usability evaluation of a multimedia e-learning resource for electrolyte and acid-base disorders.

Dr Osman Brey, retired IMA stalwart, was given the honorary duties of awarding the oaths to the graduates.

The hall was filled to capacity as parents of our graduates supported this event in a big way. We salute our parents and family members’ for their phenomenal support of our newly qualified healthcare professionals as they pave their way to success, Alhamdulillah.

Our guest speaker was the vibrant Dr Mohamed Dalwai who holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from University of Stellenbosch. He is passionate about the impact of medicine within the rural context having completed his Community Service at Manguzi – a rural community – in the Maputaland region of the KwaZulu-Natal province. This led him to join MSF as an ER doctor in various countries such as Pakistan, Libya and Syria, with missions to Haiti, Afghanistan and Sierra Leone. He is currently the President of MSF Southern Africa. In 2012, the Mail & Guardian recognized Mohammed as one of South Africa’s Top 200 youngsters specifically for his groundbreaking work around the South African triage Scale and its implementation across the world. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Emergency Medicine at the University of Cape Town.

In 2012 he co-founded The Open Medicine Project, aimed at capacitating healthcare workers through Open Access mobile apps. In 2014 he was chosen as a TED fellow giving talks in both South Africa and Brazil. The Open Medicine Project has apps been used in over 200 countries by over 140 000 healthcare workers. Mohammed believes in the accumulative value of individual contributions with the overall imperative of changing the world, one step at time.

Mohammed spoke about his personal experience and taking a different path of medicine throughout his career. He emphasised the values behind patients care and the central role of doctors in our society and how we can address challenges of the modern world. This talk was awe inspiring to both young and old, Alhamdulillah.

Spanglish guitarists offered some light entertainment with a musical interlude as the scrumptious meal was being served by Elegante Caterers.

An appeal was made for support of the Renal Dialysis Programme as the patient numbers were steadily increasing. A flyer was produced for the dinner and widely distributed, Alhamdulillah. Contributions were invited and R7000 was collected at the venue, Alhamdulillah.

Langa Clinic was highlighted as major project in Cape Town which needed ongoing support through volunteering time at the clinic. Our regular volunteers were acknowledged for their sterling service thusfar, Alhamdulillah.

Delegates were informed about the forthcoming 36th Annual Convention to be hosted at Lagoon Beach Hotel, 30th April – 1st May 2016.

The IMA ladies were singled out for praise for arranging yet another successful event, Alhamdulillah.

IMASA [Johannesburg Branch] Annual Graduation 2015

The year 2015 will be regarded as a historic year in respect of tertiary education in South Africa. This year will be remembered for students taking an active stand against the status quo and launching the #FeesMustFall campaign. Amidst all the chaos, talks and demonstrations were many final year students on the verge of graduating. Special congratulations to all those who succeeded during these trying times.

The IMASA [Johannesburg] Branch once again held a successful graduation and fund raising dinner on the 4th of December 2015 at the Sultan Bahu Hall in Mayfair Gauteng. Despite the challenges faced by the delay in examinations and results, the dedicated committee still managed to pull off a wonderful and uplifting evening. Grandaunts, families, friends, committee members and guests all thoroughly enjoyed the evening and all that it had to offer.

Melodious Quran recitals by Hafith Rashid Ahmed Motlekar (Dentistry Graduate) and Qari Ziyaad Patel left the audience mesmerized. The guest speaker, Mr Abdullah Sujee, who is a highly acclaimed educator focussed on reminding the graduates of their role as a Muslim Health Professional. All guests truly benefitted and were left enriched by Mr Sujee’s words of wisdom.

We were humbled by the presence of the son of late Dr YA Patel whom we honoured for his selfless contributions made to IMA Lenasia Clinics. Alhumdulillah, his son had accepted the award on behalf of the family and gave a very emotional and moving thank you to everybody who has acknowledged his father’s work and passion.

The meals were a gastronomic adventure that satisfied all appetites while the atmosphere allowed for the evening to be a culmination of success for the graduates, their families, the IMA and the Muslim Ummah.
